About PetYears
PetYears makes simple, honest tools to help pet owners understand their dog or cat’s age, life stage, and expected lifespan. Our goal is a calculator you can trust — grounded in real veterinary guidance, not the old “multiply by seven” myth.
How we calculate pet age
Pets age quickly in their first two years, then more gradually — and for dogs, the pace depends on size. Our calculator uses:
- The American Kennel Club size-based dog-age chart (small, medium, large, and giant breeds age at different rates).
- Standard veterinary life-stage guidance (puppy/kitten, young, adult, mature, senior).
- Typical breed lifespan ranges compiled from breed and veterinary references.
The math runs entirely in your browser. We don’t collect or store anything about your pet.
Editorial approach
Content is written and maintained by the PetYears editorial team and reviewed against published sources. We aim to keep figures accurate and clearly labeled as general guidance. If you spot something to improve, tell us.
How we’re funded
PetYears is free. We earn through display advertising and affiliate links (for example, pet insurance or pet products). If you buy through an affiliate link, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This never changes the figures our calculator shows.
PetYears is educational and is not a substitute for professional veterinary advice. Always consult your veterinarian about your pet’s health.
